Improving Literacy
Incline Elementary School recently made it a requirement for all students Kindergarten through 5th grade to be taught Spanish, so every child comes out of the school with a basic knowledge of how to speak the language.
Efforts to improve literacy are also underway with the introduction of its reading intervention program. At the end of the first-grade students are tested to determine whether they're behind in their reading skills. When students identified as having reading difficulties enter the second grade, they are immediately assigned to a tutor, who is either a volunteer or teacher, and works either one-on-one or in small groups of students every school day for 16 weeks to bring them up to speed.
Literacy has also been stressed at Incline middle and high schools. The schedule has been modified to add a basic reading class for students who are more challenged in their reading skills The school has also applied for a grant to hire a reading specialist.
At Incline High School, changes in both how they present and what they present in the English curriculum are underway. The Incline Village K-16 Council and the educational scholar it hired have been assisting the school's language issue.
Introducing New Technology
At Incline Middle School there's a technology center where students can learn how to program a robot, build carbon dioxide-powered cars and produce a radio show.
Keeping pace with the modern age, one Incline High School teacher has even started doing all of his presentations on Microsoft Power Point presenting information using a computer on a large screen.
